Comanesti : Romania
Comăneşti is a town in Bacău county, Romania, with a population of 26,230.
Its name is derived from the Cuman people.
Ilie Verdeţ was born here.
As of 2003, it has a unemployment rate of 18.1%, much higher than the country’s average and was declared a underdeveloped region.
Unfortunately the mine which in 1989 employed 5000 people will close this year (2005) making the final 260 miners unemployed.
The town has changed greatly in the last ten years – one shop (formerly Ghimes – now Robertsimo) in the centre demonstrates the fact well.
