Conciergerie

Conciergerie

The Conciergerie is near from Cathedrale Notre-Dame. This is the place where queen Marie-Antoinette detained after French Revolution. She stayed such a miserable place for several years as a prisoner. Every revolution, as a rule, has its prison. Conciergerie served as a prison during the French revolution in the 18th century. Now it is part of the Palace of Justice. Which means you’ll be searched before entering, by the way. When Conciergerie was a prison it was swarming with almost 4000 prisoners. It’s still a mystery to me how they could pack all these prisoners inside? The most famous inmates included Francois Ravaillac, and Marie-Antoinette, who was held in a small cell until the Revolution beheaded her in 1793. Also imprisoned was Charlotte Corday, who stabbed Marat while he was having a bath, not the safest of the pastimes, as it seems. To finish it with the prison theme, you can see Conciergerie’s 11th century torture chamber.
