Moineşti is a town in Romania, Bacău county. Population (1999) – 25,532.
The name is derived from the Romanian word “moină�, which means a field that is left not cultivated for a year in order to improve the productivity the next year.
Moineşti once had a large Jewish community; in Jewish contexts the name is often given as Mojnescht. The dadaist artist Tristan Tzara and Moses Rosen – Chief Rabbi of Romanian Jewry from 1948–1994 – were Moineşti-born Jews.
History
1467 – First mention of Moineşti.
1783 – Village Moineşti is mentioned in Bawer’s map.
1832 – Moineşti is for the first time mentioned as a market town. It had 188 houses and 588 inhabitants.
1921 – Moineşti is designated a comună urbană (with its own coat of arms and local administration, but a step short of being considered a municipality).
2001 – Moineşti becomes a municipality.
