Paris
Few cities leave the visitor with such vivid impressions, whether it’s the drifting cherry blossoms in the tranquil gardens of Notre-Dame, the riverside quais on a summer evening, the sound of blues in atmospheric cellar bars, or the ancient alleyways and cobbled lanes of the historic Latin Quarter and villagey Montmartre.
The city of Paris proper, with 2,125,246 inhabitants at the 1999 census, is the largest city in France. Together with its suburbs and satellite cities it forms the Greater Paris metropolitan area (French: aire urbaine de Paris) covering 14,518 km² (5,606 sq. miles), and with a population of 11,174,743 inhabitants at the 1999 census (11.5 million as of January 2004 estimates). The Greater Paris metropolitan area is the second largest in Europe (after Moscow, and along with London), and approximately the 20th largest in the world. It is also the world’s largest French speaking metropolitan area.
Known worldwide as the City of Light (la Ville Lumière), Paris has been a major tourist destination for centuries. The city is renowned for the beauty of its architecture, its urban perspectives and avenues, as well as the wealth of its museums. Built on an arc of the River Seine, it is divided into two parts: the Right Bank to the north and the smaller Left Bank to the south.
Paris is a vibrant, beautiful and culturally-rich city. The cultural and artistic capital of France is a treasure trove of beauty and history in its architecture, its museums and its expansive avenues and winding streets, together creating the city’s legendary charm. Paris never sleeps. More than 300 events per evening, more expositions and shows than you can count, as well as streets and cafe and bars full of life together render boredom in Paris an impossibility. And should you occasionally want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Parisian life, you can relax and unwind in one of the numerous gardens and parks located all over the city.
Apart from the Eiffel Tower, other sightseeing spots/landmarks are; the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Château de Versailles.
