Râmnicu Vâlcea : Romania

Râmnicu Vâlcea (population: 107,656) is a city in Vâlcea county, Romania.
History
The area has been inhabited since Dacian and Roman times. In the Middle Ages, a fortress was built; during Matei Basarab and Constantin Brancoveanu, it became an important cultural center. It was here that the first paper mill and printing press in Romania were built. During the 1848 revolution, on July 29 “Desteapta-te, Romane!, the current national anthem of Romania, was sung for the first time. In the 1980s the town has been completely rebuilt in a style combining socialism-realism with local vernacular architecture.
