Somero is a municipality of Finland.
It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Finland Proper region. The municipality has a population of 9,680 ( 2004) and covers an area of 697.72 km sq.; of which 28.70 km sq.; is water. The population density is 14.5 inhabitants per km sq.;.
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Some famous people that were either born in Somero or have lived there for significant time include: Rauli “Badding” Somerjoki, M.A. Numminen, Unto Mononen and Kaari Utrio.
History
Somero has been known as a trading place as early as 14th century. Municipality was officially founded in 1867. Somerniemi municipality was joined into Somero proper in 1977. Somero moved from the province of Hame to the province of Turku and Pori in 1990. Currently it belongs to the province of Western Finland. Somero became a city (kaupunki) in January 1, 1993.
